Do you remember the playground game King of the Hill? My buddies and I would fight tooth and nail, arms and legs flailing to get to the top of that dirt pile, taking no prisoners. My only goal was to get to the top and hold that position under any circumstances. Bruised limbs, scuffed knees, makes no never mind. Win at all costs.

Does that sound familiar?

I took that same doggedness into my early career and life. Why? I’d need a hundred pages to explain. The simplest answer is in my DNA. When my ancestors chose to know what God knew, be like Him at all costs, King of the Hill began. Survival was the only mechanism in play. To get my needs met, no matter the cost.

“The serpent was clever, more clever than any wild animal God had made. He spoke to the Woman: “Do I understand that God told you not to eat from any tree in the garden?” The Woman said to the serpent, “Not at all. We can eat from the trees in the garden. It’s only about the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, ‘Don’t eat from it; don’t even touch it or you’ll die.’” The serpent told the Woman, “You won’t die. God knows that the moment you eat from that tree, you’ll see what’s really going on. You’ll be just like God, knowing everything, ranging all the way from good to evil.” Genesis 3:1-5 (NIV)

Yielding to a loving God may seem scary at times. It’s the best antidote to living the self-life. One that does not end well. Don’t play King of the Hill. Give your life wholeheartedly to the true King, Jesus.
