The Daily Memo | February 2, 2024 | God Has Something to Say to You
One of the most important lessons you and I can learn is how to listen to God. In our complex and hectic lives, nothing is more urgent, nothing more necessary, and nothing more rewarding than hearing what God has to say to us—both as a body of believers and as individual people. You may ask, “But does God really speak to us today?” The Bible assures us He does. The book of Hebrews opens this way: “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the…

The Daily Memo | February 1, 2024 | Interfering With Our Lives
I love the story of a certain man whom Jesus interfered with, much to his initial chagrin. Remember when Jesus met the man possessed with many demons in Luke 8? So they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes, across the lake from Galilee. As Jesus was climbing out of the boat, a man who was possessed by demons came out to meet him. For a long time he had been homeless and naked, living in the tombs outside the town. As soon as he saw Jesus, he shrieked and fell down in…

The Daily Memo | January 31, 2024 | God's Name: "I Am."
Moses was apprehensive about accepting God's invitation to liberate the people. During the dialogue, God chooses to reveal His personal name to Moses. God says His name is, "I am."In Hebrew, the meaning comes across with much more meaning. Let's unpack this for a moment. When God speaks His name, the Hebrew word is "Ehweh," which means "I am and will be." When Moses or others use God's name, the Hebrew word is "Yahweh," "…

The Daily Memo | January 30, 2024 | Precious to God
As a boy, Ming found his father harsh and distant. Even when Ming was ill and had to see the pediatrician, his father grumbled that it was troublesome. Once, he overheard a quarrel and learned his father had wanted him aborted. The feeling of being an unwanted child followed him into his adult years. When Ming became a believer in Jesus, he found it difficult to relate to God as Father, even though he knew Him as Lord of his life. If, like Ming, we haven’t felt loved…

The Daily Memo | January 29, 2024 | Consequences to Choices
I was reminded by an acquaintance of mine that there’s more at stake than what feels good in the moment we make choices. Then what? In the short run, there may be a great deal of satisfaction from eating that 1,000-calorie bowl of ice cream (speaking from experience). Then what? 3 ½ of those add one more pound to my belly. If I ignored my friend for a month, who I felt dissed me as we walked by one another at work without uttering a word, then what? If I grow…

The Daily Memo | January 26, 2024 | The Heart of All Reality
The story that is the Sacred Romance begins not with God alone, the Author at his desk, but God in relationship, intimacy beyond our wildest imagination, heroic intimacy. The Trinity is at the center of the universe; perfect relationship is the heart of all reality. Think of your best moments of love or friendship or creative partnership, the best times with family or friends around the dinner table, your richest conversations, the acts of simple kindness that sometimes…

The Daily Memo | January 25, 2024 | Choosing to Follow God
“The average person will make 773,618 decisions over a lifetime,” claims the Daily Mirror. The British newspaper goes on to assert that we “will come to regret 143,262 of them.” I have no idea how the paper arrived at these numbers, but it’s clear that we face countless decisions throughout our lifetime. The sheer quantity of them might become paralyzing, especially when we consider that all our choices have consequences, some far more…

The Daily Memo | January 24, 2024 | Learning From Mistakes
To help avoid future financial mistakes, such as those in 1929 and 2008 that brought down the world’s economy, the Library of Mistakes was founded in Edinburgh, Scotland. It features a collection of more than two thousand books that can help educate the next generation of economists. And it serves as a perfect example of how, according to the library’s curators, “smart people keep doing stupid things.” The curators believe that the only way to build…

The Daily Memo | January 23, 2024 | What's In A Name
The Lord heard Sarah’s skeptical laughter a year earlier when He promised her husband Abraham that they would have a child. Believing such a thing must have seemed to her like too much of a stretch. But then, this elderly woman’s uncertainty was turned into joy with the miraculous birth of her son. The baby was given the name Isaac, just as God had instructed Abraham in Genesis 17:19. Isaac’s name means “one who laughs.” Sarah’s earlier…
